More than 2 out of every 5 adults in Great Britain believe vaping, or more specifically, the use of e-cigs, to be less harmful than the conventional cigarettes they’re rapidly displacing, according to the results of a new survey conducted by market research firm YouGov.
The survey was conducted on behalf of Electric Tobacconist, a leading retailer of vaporizers and vaporizer accessories in the United Kingdom.
Based on the survey’s findings, in which YouGov polled over 2,100 adults in Great Britain, 43 percent of the respondents indicated that they believed vaping to be generally healthier than smoking. Only 5 percent of those surveyed believed vaping to be worse than smoking and 31 percent indicated that they believed the two to be equivalent in regards to health impact on humans. The remaining 21 percent of respondents indicated that they simply didn’t know which was better or worse.
The survey comes at a time when tobacco continues to claim over 100,000 lives a year across the United Kingdom.
In 2016, the Royal College of Physicians published a report in which they concluded that “e-cigarettes are likely to be beneficial to UK public health.”
“…e-cigarettes are likely to be beneficial to UK public health. Smokers can therefore be reassured and encouraged to use them, and the public can be reassured that e-cigarettes are much safer than smoking”
Perhaps unsurprisingly, based on current scientific evidence, the U.K. government has formally recommended vaping to smokers trying to quit. The recommendation came during Public Health England’s Stoptober campaign, a campaign which aims to help smokers give up cigarettes once and for all. NHS Scotland made a similar recommendation to smokers.
The survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of Electric Tobacconist was conducted over the course of 2 days in January of 2018. All of those surveyed were 18 years or older.
