Why Is My E-Liquid Turning Brown?

Vaper Empire E-Liquids

When e-liquid, the liquid nicotine blend used in today’s electronic cigarettes, turns brown, the color change seen comes as a result of the liquid’s expose to light and oxygen.

For vape juices, exposure to oxygen and light is all it takes to kick off a series of chemical reactions that result in the breakdown of the juice’s constituents.

Nicotine, a common ingredient in e-juice, does turn light brown as it ages, the browning seen in e-liquids is primarily the result of other ingredients contained within e-liquid concoctions. In particular, it’s the flavorings used that tend to cause e-liquid blends to turn brown. As a result, even nicotine-free or “0 nic” vape juices brown when exposed to light and oxygen.

By some accounts, e-juices can even transform into a near-black color with time.

Juice Browning In Tank

E-juice browning in the tank is not all that uncommon, especially for tanks that allow a lot of light to penetrate through to the juice. Those transparent portals that vapers can look through to see how much juice they have left in their tank might be handy, but they’re also partially responsible for increased degradation of juice. Subsequently, tanks that don’t offer vapers the ability to see their juice while it’s in use may very well do better to protect juices from degrading as a result of exposure to the elements.

Preventing Color Change

In order to keep e-juices looking and tasting fresh, some manufacturers advise storing vape juices in brown airtight bottles that keep light from penetrating through to the juice and storing them in a dark, cool place like a refrigerator or freezer, preferably the latter.

Following the instructions above will help prevent light and oxygen from reaching the juice while also keeping its ingredients cool. As a result, the ingredients will stay fresh longer and the browning will not evolve as rapidly.
