Is Nicotine-Free Vaping Safe?

Vaper Empire E-Liquids

While the potential health risks and possible benefits to nicotine consumption by humans continue to be weighed, debated, and explored by scientists and researchers the world over, we’re here today to answer a simpler question – one that does not pertain to nicotine, but rather to the vapor produced by vaporizers. This question is: is it safe to vape nicotine-free blends?

Vaping 0 Nicotine – The Health Implications Examined

When it comes to vaping nicotine-free liquids, such as 0 nicotine e-juices, there are still some safety to concerns to address. While scientists continue to research and debate the health implications of vaping no nicotine e-liquids, here’s what we know thus far.

For starters, inhaling anything other than clean, fresh air is probably not ideal. That said, there’s a reasonable chance that vaping in general, or at least vaping flavored e-liquids and the like, is not healthy. For those who smoke, however, there’s a growing body of scientific evidence that points to vaping being less harmful than smoking. In other words, if you’re a smoker, you should probably put down the cigarette and pickup the vape – that is, if you haven’t found any success in quitting with other smoking cessations.

A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that even in non-smokers, just a single puff from a nicotine-infused electronic cigarette was enough for the study’s participants to exhibit a biological marker associated with increased heart disease risk in tobacco users. Which is to say, vaping nicotine may be linked to an increase risk of heart disease in humans. To the contrary, a study carried out over the course of 2-years by one of the top e-cig brands has found vaping to be safe, but some find their research questionable if not for the sole reason of who funded it. As it stands, it seems rather likely that we’ll just have to wait for the science to catch up to the technology before we’ll have our answer on whether or not vaping nicotine is safe or harmful and if the latter- how harmful.

As for vaporizing blends that contain no nicotine, there are still health concerns and one of the big ones is: what exactly is in that flavored e-juice you’re vaping? As ScienceNews reported back in the summer of 2016, simply allowing your e-liquid to age can potentially result in an increase in toxicants in the vapor you inhale, which is largely the result of solvents found in the liquid itself. And as some studies have found, some e-liquids are certainly more toxic than others. In the case of cherry flavored e-liquids, just one example, researchers have found high levels of benzaldehydes in the vapor emitted – more so in the cherry flavored e-liquid that they tested than the other flavors they examined during the course of their study, which was published in the journal Thorax.

The Consensus – Is Vaping No Nicotine Safe?

In general, it’s probably not good for you to vaporize. Vaping nicotine may have its own health implications, but vaping no nicotine e-liquids may very well harbor its own health concerns. At this time, the science remains inconclusive. Subsequently, your best bet is to not vape – not nicotine free nor nicotine infused. But if you’re a smoker looking for a less harmful alternative, one that may actually help you quit smoking, then vaping might very well be a solution for you.

If you’re looking for a one-sentence summary of whether or not it’s safe to vaporize 0 nicotine e-juices, our answer is as such: scientists have yet to reach a unanimous conclusion, which is why when it comes right down to it, you’re vaping at what is potentially your own risk. Although, notably, there’s a distinct possibility that it’s safer to vape nicotine-free blends than it is to vape ones that contain nicotine.
