As the sale of Juul electronic cigarettes continues to rise in the United States, the gap between their particular brand of e-cigs and the next most popular brand in the U.S. continues to spread.
While Juul jumped from 40 percent on December 2 to 46.8 percent on December 30, Vuse, owned by R.J. Reynolds Vapor, dropped from 24.3 percent to 20.7 percent. All data derived from Nielsen, who tracks vaporizer market data among other things.
Juul e-cigs are essentially pen vapes designed to vaporize nicotine. They’re roughly the same shape as a USB stick and boast a similar appearance, making them somewhat discrete in comparison to other similar devices on the market today.
The company was spun-off from Pax Labs, formerly Ploom, which separated its business in such a fashion as to isolate their herbal vaporizers from their electronic cigarettes. Juul for nicotine, Pax for dry herbs.
Adjunct law professor David Sweanor with the University of Ottawa was quoted by the Winston-Salem Journal as having said that the graph showing Juul’s growing market share “is a great example of Clayton Christensen’s ‘S’ curves of innovative companies blowing away the competition.”
Juul’s first vape product, as far as we’re aware, was the Ploom Pods, which was first introduced to the market at a time before Ploom broke into two companies, Pax Labs and Juul Labs. After Juul was spun-off from Pax, the company retained the Ploom Pods.
Following the spinning off of Juul Labs from Pax Labs, the company’s CEO, Tyler Goldman, became the CEO of both Pax and Juul. However, Goldman has stepped away from the vape companies, which are in no small part backed by Japan Tobacco International, as Juul hired former Chobani COO Kevin Burns as their CEO.
