In yet another reported case of an electronic cigarette allegedly exploding, a man in Sykesville, Maryland was burned while changing the batteries on his e-cigarette.

The man, who was not identified in news reports, wound up in the hospital following the incident, where he was treated for burns across 18 percent of his body.

A notice of investigation released by the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal indicated that the man was in the process of swapping the batteries on his e-cig when the device exploded. As a result of the incident, he suffered burns to his face, arms, and chest.

The incident occurred on January 7, 2018 and as of the following day at 4:00 p.m. (EST), the man was still being treated for his injuries at Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center, where he was transported following the explosion, local news outlet Carroll County Times reported.

Not An Isolated Incident

This is by no means the first reported incident of an electronic cigarette exploding, or perhaps more specifically, its corresponding battery exploding. As we previously reported, such incidents are actually on the rise and could come as a result of user error (mishandling), faulty batteries, and possibly other reasons.

The reality is that when it comes to the Lithium-ion batteries that power many such devices, there is a chance of explosion. This is by no means limited to vaporizers and electronic cigarettes as the issue has been seen in laptops, smartphones, and other electronic devices that are powered by similar Li-ion technology.
