A mother in England claims her vape pen exploded and set fire to her bedroom carpet.

The woman, Nyoka Reid, was quoted by local news outlet Derby Telegraph as having said that the fire “could have burned down” her home in Derby, England if her partner hadn’t been fast to act, allegedly putting out the flames before they could spread.

By Reid’s account, the vaporizer exploded at around 3:00 a.m. and when it did, she claims that it literally “shot across the room” and smashed through the ceiling light fixture before landing in a plastic bag. Shortly after, the bag itself erupted in flames and soon after that, her carpet.

According to Reid, her partner, a man by the name of Sean Garland, was quick to put out the flames, using a shoe to bring an end to the fire before it spread throughout the home. Subsequently, she claims that the home’s carpet must now be replaced.

“We panicked and my partner quickly used one of my shoes to put out the fire. My boys were woken up by all the noise but they quickly went back to bed.”

By her account, her three young children were in the home at the time of the incident. Fortunately, she says that they woke up when it happened, giving them time to put the fire out before it set the home ablaze. She referred to the incident as “terrifying,” the Derby Telegraph reported.

“It was terrifying (…) My three young boys were in the house, we were all asleep and our house could have burned down if we didn’t wake up. It could’ve killed us.”

As for why she had the vape pen in the first place, she told the Derby Telegraph that she purchased the pen in an attempt to quit smoking, however, after the incident, she has no intent of using one ever again. Which she says is due to a lack of trust following the alleged incident.
