New Review Estimates E-Cigarettes To Be Around 95% Less Harmful Than Smoking

Public Health England (PHE) released the findings of an independent evidence review conducted by experts which found electronic cigarettes to be around 95 percent less harmful than conventional cigarettes.

This latest review adds more weight to the argument that vaping is less harmful than smoking, which is a point that PHE seems intent on conveying to its citizens in light of the review’s additional finding that nearly half of Great Britain’s population has yet to realize that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful than traditional cigarettes.

The review, which was led by professor Ann McNeill with King’s College London and professor Peter Hajek with Queen Mary University of London, was commissioned by Public Health England.

While the comprehensive review examined a great deal of evidence and found numerous conclusions, the key findings highlighted by PHE in a press release are as follows:

  • 44.8 percent of the population doesn’t realize that vaping electronic cigarettes is a lot less harmful than smoking cigarettes.
  • Vaping e-cigs is, based on what they refer to as the current best estimate, around 95 percent less harmful than smoking traditional cigarettes.
  • The notion that e-cigarettes are a gateway of sorts for non-smokers and children that leads to smoking is not backed by any current evidence.

In other words, those who claim that vaping leads to smoking in non-smokers and children can’t back their claim with scientific evidence because it does not exist at this time and nearly half the population of Great Britain is unaware that vaping is dramatically less harmful than smoking.

Professor Kevin Fenton, the director of health and well-being at Public Health England, was quoted by PHE in their release as having said that in England, smoking remains the “number one killer and the best thing a smoker can do is to quit completely, now and forever.”

“Smoking remains England’s number one killer and the best thing a smoker can do is to quit completely, now and forever.”

Fenton added that while e-cigs “are not completely risk free” they “carry just a fraction of the harm” associated with smoking.

“E-cigarettes are not completely risk free but when compared to smoking, evidence shows they carry just a fraction of the harm. The problem is people increasingly think they are at least as harmful and this may be keeping millions of smokers from quitting. Local stop smoking services should look to support e-cigarette users in their journey to quitting completely.”

In other words, those who smoke should quit now and never pick up another cigarette because it’s in their best interest. But for those who want to use an e-cig or similar smoke-free device to help them quit, the latest evidence shows that doing so would be a smart move. Then again, the smartest move would be to do neither: don’t smoke, don’t vape.
