In a bid to help evaluate what role, if any, e-cigs play in tobacco harm reduction, researchers Daniel P. Giovenco with Colombia University Mainmail School of Public Health’s Department of Sociomedical Sciences and Cristine D. Delnevo with Rutgers School of Public Health’s Center for Tobacco studies banded together to conduct a new study.

According to the findings of their study, published in the peer-reviewed science journal Addictive Behaviors, the daily electronic cigarette users that they sampled were over three times as likely to quit smoking than those who never used an e-cig. And of those who quit, some were using “frequent e-cig use” to prevent relapse.

Stanton A. Glantz, PhD, with the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), cited the study’s findings as evidence that daily users are more apt to quit than those who use less frequently while stressing a few key words, those being “more likely.”

Based on this and the growing body of evidence that vaping is less harmful than smoking, the conclusion on the matter seems clear, yet there are still questions that remain. One such question that the study’s authors point out pertains to the lower rate at which infrequent e-cig users quit smoking in comparison to those who use e-cigs more often. For the answers to the questions and others like it, we’ll just have to wait as scientists continue to delve into the mysteries of e-cigs in an attempt to understand this global phenomenon and what impacts it has on not only us, but the world we live in.

Here are some other highlights from the study’s findings:

  • More than half of the daily e-cig users that were sampled quit smoking within the last 5 years.
  • Some of the daily e-cig users were actually the “least likely” to quit smoking.

Why do you think that the daily e-cig users that the study sampled were more apt to quit smoking than the less frequent ones?
