After the United States Army issued a public health warning on Monday indicating that two U.S. Marines had died as a result of vaping synthetic CBD oil, the Army Public Health Center updated the statement to indicate that no Army personnel had died as a result of vaping.

Chanel Weaver, a spokesperson for the Army Public Health Center, reportedly told the Military Times on Thursday that the reported deaths were incorrect and that while military personnel had been hospitalized after vaping synthetic CBD oils, there were no fatalities.

As a result of the incorrect information issued by the Public Health Center, various outlets picked up the story and reported it to their viewers. One such report, issued by the Associated Press and syndicated by various outlets including the New York Daily News, falsely indicated based on the incorrect information supplied by the Public Health Center that two Marine had died as a result of seizures induced by vaping synthetic CBD.

According to the Marine Corps Times, the U.S. Army prohibits their soldiers from using CBD as well as other substances derived from cannabis, which has in turn led some soldiers to turn to synthetic alternatives. These synthetics, as some refer to them, have been associated with serious adverse health effects that range from nausea and headaches to seizures, vomiting, palpitations, disorientation, and dizziness, according to the Army’s recently issued warning.

The Army was quick to note in their warning that real CBD, not the synthetic stuff potentially responsible for the recent health conditions exhibited by some soldiers, “has not yet been associated with adverse health effects.”

“Although pure CBD oil has not yet been associated with adverse health effects, CBD vape oils most likely contain synthetic cannabinoids, concentrated tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and/or other hazardous compounds in addition to, or in place of, CBD oil.”

A total of 60 soldier were treated for medical conditions potentially related to their use of synthetic CBD oil.
