New Study Shows Some Smokers Do Not Benefit From Vaping

While tobacco and vaping companies alike, some of which are now one in the same, are pushing vapes as an alternative to traditional smoking methods, namely cigarettes, it appears as if not all smokers benefit from this tactic, as the findings of a new study suggest that some smokers are actually smoking more cigarettes, possibly as a result of their vaping habits.

According to the study, which was published in the journal Preventive Medicine, some of the study’s participants, young adults, smoked more cigarettes when they added an electronic cigarette to their diet.

Simplifying the study’s findings, study lead author Neal Doran, a psychologist and professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, said that the study’s “participants who were vaping ended up using more cigarettes.” He noted that vaping is “actually a risk factor for increasing” cigarette use, according to the study’s findings.

“The participants who were vaping ended up using more cigarettes. It’s actually a risk factor for increasing their cigarette use (…) They’re not using e-cigarettes to try to stop smoking”

Of course, this is limited to those who smoke and vape at the same time, whereas for those who are vaping to quit smoking, something that some of us at Vaporizer Wire have experienced personally, vaporizers can certainly prove to be beneficial in kicking the habit.

Regardless of what the science says, which will almost certainly have an impact on policy changes regulating the vapor industry, sales are up and are expected, according to Wells Fargo Securities analysts, expected to reach a whopping $4.4 billion in 2018, Reuters reports.

So what is the truth about e-cigs? Is it safe? Is it at least healthier than smoking cigarettes? Is it helping people quit? While scientists continue to research and debate the issues at the heart of the vaping controversies and questions, Doran offered up a current analysis of the situation at hand as he stated:

“If they’re harmless, and they help people quit, then they’re great. If they make it harder to quit and also encourage people to smoke cigarettes who would not have smoked otherwise, then they’re terrible (…) The truth probably lies in the middle, but where exactly is the key question.”
