After a rash of illnesses and deaths across the United States that health officials believe to be linked to vaping, Massachusetts has announced a four-month ban on all vaping products that has already gone into effect.

Boston, MA
Boston’s governor has enacted a 4-month emergency ban on all vaping products.

The newly announced ban, which Republican Governor Charlie Baker enacted after declaring a public health emergency, is currently scheduled to last until January 25, 2020.

In a press release, Gov. Baker said that the purpose of the health emergency “is to temporarily pause all sales of vaping products so that we can work with our medical experts to identify what is making people sick and how to better regulate these products to protect the health of our residents.”

While THC-based products have been singled out by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as the cause of many of the recent illnesses reported, the newly enacted ban on vaping products in Massachusetts also includes e-cigarettes and other nicotine vaping products. A smaller number of cases of reported illness that have surfaced in recent weeks may stem from nicotine vaping products, according to health officials whose investigation is ongoing.

No vaping related deaths have been reported in Massachusetts. Elsewhere in the United States, the CDC has confirmed seven vaping related deaths as of September 19, 2019.
