Dapper Dan’s Vapor Things Vape Shop Hosts Cloud Chasing Competition In Virginia

Dapper Dan’s Vapor Things, a vape shop in Lynchburg, Virginia, held its first “sanctioned” cloud chasing competition last month and you may be surprised by just how serious they took the event.

Cloud chasing, for those unfamiliar, is a competitive vaping sport in which competitors compete against one another in front of a panel of judges to claim the title of best cloud chaser. Competitors are judged primarily on the density and size of the vapor “cloud” that they exhale while standing back-to-back in direction competition with one another. Some contests also judge competitors based on tricks and techniques, such as blowing vapor-rings and the like.

While those who see the sport as silly, there are those who take it quite serious and the Cloud Competition Sports League (CCSL) is one such organization. CCSL is dedicated to standardizing cloud chasing rules. In other words, they want to set a universal standard for what the rules are that govern such competitive vaping events.

The organization’s vice president, Hoyt Adickes, was quoted by The News & Advance as having said that the CCSL essentially ensures that “all the judges are unbiased, all the rules are stuck to and everything runs just like a professional sport.”

Dan Davis, the owner of Dapper Dan’s vape shop, referred to the 70 plus attendees at the event as a common number for such competitions. As for the competition itself, he called it “a spectacle,” News & Advance reported.

“It’s a spectacle. I think that’s why people enjoy coming out. People who vape for fun like to come out here to see the guys do tricks and blow big clouds.”

This particular event was divided into three unique classes, which included a biggest cloud competition and two vape tricks categories in which competitors competed to blow vapor-rings among other things.

One of the cloud chasing event’s competitors, local Scotty Gue, was quoted by News & Advance as having said that it’s more “about the recognition” than it is about the prizes, which included hundreds of dollars worth of vape supplies and apparel according to the shop’s owner.

“It’s not even about the prizes, it’s about the recognition (…) Overall it’s fun. Winning, losing it doesn’t matter. We’re out here to have fun.”

Gue, a competitive vaper, was himself a recipient of a fair share of the night’s prizes as he found himself crowned the winner of the competition’s first event.
