The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a statement indicating that the federal agency is investigating reports of people experiencing seizures after using e-cigarettes.
According to the FDA’s statement, there have been a total of 35 reported cases of seizures following e-cigarette use that have been voluntarily reported to poison control centers and the agency between 2010 and 2019. These cases, by the FDA’s account, “warrant scientific investigation into whether there is in fact a connection” between e-cigarette use and seizures.
“While 35 cases may not seem like much compared to the total number of people using e-cigarettes, we are nonetheless concerned by these reported cases. We also recognize that not all of the cases may be reported. We believe these 35 cases warrant scientific investigation into whether there is in fact a connection.”
The federal agency further clarified its current perception of the potential issue in stating that the FDA does not yet know if there’s a direct relationship between e-cigarette use and seizure risk.
“We want to be clear that we don’t yet know if there’s a direct relationship between the use of e-cigarettes and a risk of seizure. We can’t say for certain that e-cigarettes are causing these seizures.”
The FDA is responsible for regulating tobacco products in the United States.
