The unincorporated Illinois county known as Kane County is considering raising the legal age requirement for purchasing and possessing tobacco products from 18 to 21.

If the county decides to raise the age requirement, it would make it the twentieth locale in the state to raise the legal tobacco age to 21, the Daily Herald reported.

Nicotine vaping products such as electronic cigarettes and the like would also find their age requirement raised under the proposal, which was reintroduced by Barb Jeffers, the health department’s executive director.

Jeffers reportedly told the members of the county board that it’s time to renew the debate. Jeffers pointed to the use of vaping products by high school students as a reason for to renew discussions regarding the legal tobacco buying age.

Some vaping products, such as electronic cigarettes, contain nicotine while others do not. In fact, some e-liquid manufactures make vape juice flavors that contain no nicotine. Nicotine, which has been shown to be addictive, is often incorrectly linked to cancer, multiple studies have found.

What do you think, should Kane County raise their tobacco age from 18 to 21?
