Daily Vaping May Increase Heart Attack Risk, New Research Suggests

The findings of a new study conducted by researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and George Washington University suggests that vaping might actually double one’s risk of having a heart attack – this in comparison to those who neither vape nor smoke.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the large study also suggests that daily smokers of conventional cigarettes are at an even higher risk of having a heart attack. In comparison to those who neither smoke nor vape, their research suggests that daily smokers are at three times the risk of having a heart attack.

And for those who vape and smoke simultaneously, which some refer to as “dual users,” the risk of a heart attack is five fold – or so their research suggests.

This means that if you vape and smoke, you may be increasing your risk of a heart attack by five times that of non smokers and vapers.

According to the study’s lead author, Stanton Glantz, the director of UCSF’s Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, it’s this finding in particular that should be of utmost concern to e-cigarette users who also smoke conventional cigarettes.

Glantz was quoted by the UCSF News Center’s Elizabeth Fernandez as having said that “[t]he finding of increased heart attack risk for e-cigarette use, in addition to the risks of any smoking, is particularly troubling, because most people who use e-cigarettes continue to smoke cigarettes.”

The findings of the study–in which researchers analyzed National Health Interview Surveys data from 2014 and 2016, which covered nearly 70,000 people–were presented earlier this year at the 2018 annual meeting of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco.
