The Juul e-cigarette company, the largest in the U.S., has finally decided to adhere to the California law that prohibits vaping in the workplace. Subsequently, the company has told its employees working inside of the company’s San Francisco headquarters to stop vaping at their desks and to take their e-cig use outside.

California banned the use of e-cigs in workplaces back in June of 2016. Juul launched its now extremely popular Juul devices and pods roughly one year later in 2017.

Weighing in on the decision to tell their employees to take their vape use outside, Juul CEO Kevin Burns reportedly sent an email to the company’s employees in which he said that while it might “feel nonsensical to prohibit at-work use of the very products we work hard to create and promote,” Juul must, like any company, “comply with the legal requirements” that prohibit the use of e-cigarettes in the workplace, the Wall Street Journal reported.

“It may feel nonsensical to prohibit at-work use of the very products we work hard to create and promote. But the bottom line is we need to comply with legal requirements the same as any company.”

The decision to formally inform the company’s staff at their headquarters in S.F. may have come as a result of an inquiry that the company received from city officials regarding potential vape use in the company’s offices, as the email that Burns sent to employees reportedly made mention of the inquiry from city officials.
