Billionaire media mogul and world renown philanthropist Michael Bloomberg, whose wealth is estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars, has announced yet another effort to combat tobacco use around the planet: the formation of a new tobacco industry watchdog organization that will be tasked with monitoring the practices of tobacco companies.

To kick things off, the former mayor of New York announced on March 7, 2018 that he is committing $20 million towards the formation of the new watchdog organization, CBS News reported.

Bloomberg indicated in a statement that “tobacco control measures have saved nearly 35 million lives” over the last decade, “but as more cities and countries take action, the tobacco industry is pushing to find new users, particularly among young people.”

He added, “We cannot stand by as the industry misleads the public in an effort to get more people hooked on its products — and this global watchdog will help us hold the industry accountable.”

The new organization is known as Stopping Tobacco Organizations and Products, or “STOP” for short. Their goal is to provide non-profits and countries with advise on how to combat the influence of tobacco companies and to keep track of the industry’s marketing tactics.
