Hernandez was quoted by Fox 13 as having described her injuries as “burns, bruises, scratches.”

According to Hernandez, she purchased the exploding vape pen batteries from a vape store in Bloomingdale, Florida.

She was quoted as having said of the incident, “I heard the explosion and then I saw the fire shoot and I thought somebody hit me with a firework.”

By her account, the explosion left both her and her aunt with second-degree burns. She claims her aunt was hit in the face when the batteries exploded.

She was quoted by Fox 13 as having said that she turned to her right and saw her aunt “throwing water on her eye and she’s screaming.”

According to Tampa Vapor’s owner, Mike Synychak, batteries are generally “safe when used properly.”

Synychak added that education on how to use vape batteries and how to store them “is very important.” Subsequently, both Tampa Vapor locations require all new customers to review and sign a battery-safety disclaimer form. In addition, the shops have signs about battery safety posted on every counter.
