The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) wants you to know that charging your vape with a charger other than the one its manufacturer intends for it to be charged with could prove dangerous, which is why you should avoid doing it.
This means that if your vape battery runs dry and you don’t have your vape’s charger handy, but you do have your phone charger on hand and it seems compatible – think again because there’s a chance that it could cause battery problems, which could lead to an exploding battery, or so the FDA seems to think.
According to the FDA’s Tips to Help Avoid “Vape” Battery Explosions, there is evidence to suggest “that battery-related issues may lead to vape explosions.” And there it is, the FDA’s explanation for why vapers should avoid charging their vapes with anything other than the charging cords, docks, and stations that come with them.
“You may have heard that e-cigarettes, or “vapes,” can explode and seriously injure people. Although they appear rare, these explosions are dangerous. The exact causes of such incidents are not yet clear, but some evidence suggests that battery-related issues may lead to vape explosions. The safety tips below may help you avoid a vape battery explosion.”
The FDA, via their FDA Tobacco account on Twitter, tweeted a message to this effect, telling consumers not to charge their vapes with phone or tablet chargers.
Even if your phone charger fits your vape, only use the charger meant for the device.

If your vape battery does explode, the FDA wants you to report the incident to the appropriate federal agencies through the Safety Reporting website run by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
