Following the UFC 202 match in which Nate Diaz pit himself against the likes of Conor McGregor in a rematch that Diaz lost, the 32-year-old Stockton, California born UFC fighter pulled out a vape pen and took a puff – a puff that did not go unnoticed.

At the time, it’s hard to imagine that he had any idea that this small little act would spark major regulatory changes not only for the UFC, but also the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

CBD, which is legal in all 50 states across the United States due to its widely recognized health benefits, has no psychoactive elements, yet it was banned in the UFC as a result of the WADA anti-doping standards that the UFC adheres to. Subsequently, when Diaz bust out his vape and took a puff of what we now know to have been CBD, his first puff acted as the catalyst to regulatory change at WADA.

In light of this first puff, WADA examined the information available and altered their policy, adding an amendment of sorts to the organization’s list of banned substances. They called it “The Nate Diaz Rule.”

As of January 1, 2018, CBD is no longer on the banned substance list.

Prior to this, CBD was banned only in-competition. This means that it could not be used by athletes on weigh-in day or the day of the fight. Which is why when Diaz took a puff of his CBD filled vape, he was technically in violation of this rule. But thanks to this small act, Diaz and his fellow fighters no longer have to worry about puffing on CBD as it’s no longer a violation of the WADA rules that the UFC follows.
