A woman in Florida’s Pinellas County was injured while riding a bus after something in her backpack caught on fire and according to local fire officials, it may have been an exploding e-cig.

Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) director Jeff Thompson was quoted by local news outlet Fox 13 as having said that they “thought it was a vapor cigarette or something along that line” that left the woman injured.

“We thought it was a vapor cigarette or something along that line but we’ll know after we get more information from Largo PD”

According to local officials, no other passengers on the bus were injured as a result of the incident. The woman who was injured was left with minor injuries that did require hospital treatment.

How Often Do Vapes Explode?

PTSA officials did not confirm that it was indeed an exploding vaporizer or vape battery. If it was, it certainly wouldn’t be the only reported incident of an exploding vape. In fact, data from the United States Fire Administration, which has been tracking such incidents for some years now, shows that such incidents of exploding vapes is on the rise, which is perhaps not all that surprising given vaping’s rise in popularity. Data from the FDA confirms this apparent rise in exploding vapes across the country.

What Can Vapers Do To Protect Themselves?

One thing vape users can do to protect themselves from the possibility of exploding batteries is to check to see if the battery they’re using has been recalled.

Another thing that vapers can do in an attempt to prevent such mishaps from occurring with their own vapes is to handle their batteries with care.

And yet another piece of advice for vape users is to avoid modifying their vaporizers as such attempts at modification, according to the American Vaping Association (AVA), have been, at least in part, responsible for some exploding vapes.
