Why Does My Throat Hurt When I Vape?

Vaper Empire E-Liquids

Some vapers may experience a sore throat when vaping and here are some of the reasons why and what one can do about it.

While this list is not necessarily a complete list of all the reasons why sore throats occur in some users while they’re vaping, these are some of the more common reasons why this issue occurs for some users.

  • Excessive PG – Propylene Glycol, which is known as “PG” for short, is used as a base in e-liquid concoctions. For those familiar with the notion of throat hits (the sensation of vapor hitting the back of the throat), it adds to the throat hit effect when vaping. But too much PG can cause a sore throat. Which is why, if you’re experiencing this, you may want to switch to an e-liquid that uses a VG base or try using an e-liquid with a lower percentage of PG.
  • Dry Hits – While these are quite common, they won’t necessarily lead to a sore throat, but they sure can cause a burning sensation in the throat which can last for a matter of minutes, if not longer. Dry hits typically occur when the tank or cartridge runs out of e-juice, resulting in scorched hits that are generally nothing shy of unpleasant. Ensuring that your tanks and cartridges have an adequate amount of juice before vaping is an easy way to avoid this uncomfortable phenomenon.
  • Tobacco Cessation – For smokers that have recently quit smoking, a form of withdrawal known as cessation can take place, leaving one with, among other things, a sore throat. The remedy here is to wait it out. After a while, the soreness should dissipate. If it doesn’t, you may want to consult a licensed physician.

As for remedies, the remedies are pretty straightforward in the sense that anything that soothes the throat may prove to be useful. For instance, warm tea and cool water have been shown to help soothe a sore throat. But in a general sense, the best advice may simply be to relax the throat and keep well hydrated.
