With the rise in vaping’s popularity in the United States and abroad, it may come as little to no surprise to find that vapes have been spotted in use and on school grounds and now teachers in the Tempe Union High School District in Tempe, Arizona are on the lookout for students vaping, be it a Juul or some other device.

According to Jennifer Liewer with the Tempe Union High School District, teachers are keeping their eyes peeled when it comes to spotting and stopping vaping on campus. A move which comes on the heels of reports of students Juuling in bathrooms, in classrooms, and elsewhere on campuses across the United States.

By Liewer’s account, one student in the school district in which she works was brave enough to charge their vape while at school and in class – a tactic which for “a very short period of time” before those around realized what was going on.

“We had one student who was charging theirs in their classroom and for a very short period of time people didn’t realize what they were doing.”

Vaping in general is prohibited on school grounds across the Tempe Union High School District, which includes seven high schools.

Another student in the school district was reportedly caught vaping on campus after setting off a fire alarm while trying to hide in a closet and vape.

As for just how popular vaping is among students, a 2017 survey conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that one out of every six 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students surveyed reported using a vape within the last 30 days.

While the potential health implications of vaping remain unclear as scientists and researchers continue to study vaping’s effects on the human body, there are those who are concerned that vaping could lead to an increase in youth smoking – a concern which Public Health England has found no evidence to support in their latest independent electronic cigarette review.
