Exploding vapes? Yup, it happens. And now the FDA has advice on how to avoid finding yourself a victim of the rising trend. Here’s the advice they’re offering, in list format.
1. Consider Using Vapes With Safety Features
By the FDA’s account, it’s in the interest of consumers to consider using vapes that feature safety features “such as firing locks, vent holes, and protection against overcharging.”
2. Properly Store Loose Batteries
In order to prevent batteries from coming in contact with metals that might be present in one’s pocket or bag, the FDA suggests storing them in a case.
3. Always Use An Appropriate Charger
The FDA recommends always using the charger that your vape device came with to charge it. Subsequently, you won’t want to be using your phone charger or similar, even if it fits, so long as you’re adhering to the FDA’s advice.
4. Don’t Charge Your Vape Unattended
Never leave your vape unattended while it’s charging. This means that if you’re going to charge it while you sleep, you may want to reconsider as doing so could prove to be hazardous to your health. At least, that’s the FDA’s take on it.
5. Replace Wet And Damaged Batteries
If your vape batteries get wet or damaged, replace them. If your vape gets wet or damaged and you’re unable to replace your batteries (non-user replaceable), the FDA suggests contacting the manufacturer of your device.
Here are some additional tips offered by the FDA to help keep your vape batteries from exploding:
- Don’t disable any of your vaping device’s safety features.
- Only use batteries that are recommended for your particular device.
- Don’t use different battery brands other than what’s recommended.
- Don’t use batteries with different charge levels.
- Never use old and new batteries at the same time.
- Always charge your vape on a clean surface that’s both flat and away from anything that might easily catch fire.
- Always keep your vape in sight while charging.
- Shield your vape from extreme temperatures.
- Never leave your vape in direct sunlight.
- Don’t leave your vape in freezing conditions, such as overnight in a car.
