As cities, towns, countries, and states continue to consider the health implications of vaping, a trend that’s clearly on the rise, the regulatory landscape is in an apparent state of constant flux. Now, in a city in Indiana state’s Hamilton County, city councilors have added new language to their existing smoking ordinance that effectively bans the use of vaporizers across their city’s playgrounds, parks, and other public spaces where smoking is already prohibited.

This new ban takes place in Fishers, Indiana, a city that had an estimated population of some 90,000 residents in 2016, according to U.S. census data. It is there that the city council members unanimously approved the new amendment to the city’s smoking ordinance, which essentially places vaping devices such as electronic cigarettes in the same class as tobacco products such as traditional cigarettes.

The vote to ban the use of e-cigs and similar devices was held in January of 2018, which was just last month for those reading this at the time of reporting.

While the city council members added language for vaping to the ordinance, they also added chewing tobacco to the list.

The Hamilton Southeastern School District, according to the city council, already has a policy in place which effectively bans the use of electronic cigarettes on school campuses.

Addressing to some degree the notion of the council members considering further regulatory efforts aimed at stemming the sale of vaping products, City Council President Todd Zimmerman was quoted by Fox59 as having said:

“To overcome addiction is tough for anybody and so that’s a great tool for them to do that but we want to make sure we’re not introducing potentially bad habits with regards to the school children”

A local vape shop owner, Mason Odle of Just Vapor, reportedly asked the city council members not to include vaping in its entirety, nor smoking for that matter, while citing the number of folks that his store has helped quit smoking.
