Is It Safe To Vape Expired E-Juice?

Vaper Empire E-Liquids

With vaping’s popularity on the rise, the question of whether or not it’s safe to vape expired e-liquid juice is increasingly prevalent, which is why we’ve decided to address the concern in its entirety.

Before we begin, we just want to point out the fact that there is no universally accepted standard on e-juice expiration dates. In fact, some manufacturers, like Juul Labs, claim that their e-liquids don’t expire, or rather – that they don’t have an expiration date. But is that really the case? Let’s explore.

It may be reasonable to address the life expectancy of an e-juice based on the life expectancy of its ingredients and as most e-juices contain either PG or VG, we can, with relative ease, determine the expiration date of e-juices based on the time it takes these ingredients to expire. And then there’s nicotine, another ingredient that most e-juice formulas contain, which offers yet another chance to determine the expiration date of the e-juice based on its ingredients, in this case nicotine.

With PG, VG, and nicotine, all three common e-juice ingredients are known to expire after approximately two-years. By which we mean that their stated shelf-live is approximately two-years. With this in mind, it might be safe to assume that most e-juices will expire after a couple of years or so, assuming they’ve been properly stored. But even then, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the e-juices have expired, leaving open the question of how one determines when an e-juice really does expire – or if it even does for that matter.

How To Spot Expired E-Juice

While the debate rages around the question of whether e-juices even expire, it might be safe to assume that most agree that e-juices can and do degrade in quality over time, especially when improperly stored. This is a notion that has been backed by numerous reports from vapers who, by their own accounts, have experienced a degradation in quality with their e-juices over time. A loss of flavor being what is perhaps the most commonly reported occurrence.

Here are some tip and tricks for determining whether or not your e-juice has spoiled/expired:

  • Sniff Test – The ol’ sniff test, for some users, does the trick. Simply crack open the bottle, give it a sniff, and if something seems off, consider ditching the bottle. There’s a chance that your nose will immediately recognize that the bottle has gone bad, even if your eyes don’t manage to catch anything suspicious.
  • Visual Inspection – Take a look at your liquid, see if anything is amiss. If something is, consider disposing of the liquid and replacing it with something fresh. One thing that you may notice is a separation in the various ingredients. If they’re separated, give it a quick shake or two and if they’re not mixing, there’s a chance it’s expired.
