Juul Labs, the California-based vape company behind the popular line of Juul vaping products, announced late last month that it’s spending $30 million to support a combination of state and federal initiatives aimed at raising the minimum tobacco product buying age to 21.

The announcement comes in the wake of a federal crackdown on the sale of Juul products to minors, which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced just one day prior to Juul’s own announcement regarding their decision to spend $30 million on efforts aimed at combating the use of their products by minors.

Prior to both announcements, Juul Labs tweeted its support for the FDA’s fight against combustible tobacco products and youth tobacco initiation.

In the FDA’s announcement, the agency’s commissioner, Scott Gottlieb, M.D., outlined statement in five bullet points, which covered the agency’s citation of 40 retailers for violations stemming from youth sales of Juul e-cigs, new actions that they’ve taken to examine Juul’s appeal to youth, the steps they’re taking to shutdown online Juul sales to minors, and their “blitz of retail establishments targeting youth sale violations.”

In addition to pledging $30 million towards youth tobacco product use initiatives, Juul Labs also indicated that it would work with tobacco control individuals, public officials, and the Iowa Attorney General to create a framework to facilitate the independent study of vaping products and their impact.

The company also indicated that it would invest in research and development with the goal of evaluating technologies that could help prevent youth access to their products.
