Juul Pulls Flavored Vape Pods From Store Shelves

Juul Labs, makers of the most popular nicotine vaping devices in the United States, has announced that it’s temporarily halting sales of its flavored pods to retailers.

While the company has decided to cease distribution of its flavored pods to retail outlets, it continues to sell its pods in all of their available flavors direct to consumers via its own website, which doubles as an online store.

This means that for those who buy their Juul Pods from local retailers such as gas stations and convenience stores, they’ll either have to settle for what local retailers are carrying or look online to Juul’s own website to resupply their stash.

The move comes as regulators have their sights set on the San Francisco-based vape company in light of vaping’s rising popularity. With numerous reports of underage vaping, it is perhaps no surprise that regulators have begun to target the company, which is the largest in the U.S. based on market share.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plans to unveil a series of regulatory efforts aimed at thwarting underage use of vaping products. The New York Times reports that the agency is expected to announce a ban on flavored e-cig sales at the local retailer level later this week. In addition, the agency is reportedly expected to announce new age verification requirements for online retailers of nicotine vaping products.

According to FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, “kid-appealing” e-cigarette flavors such as candies and fruits are at “the core of the epidemic.” As for mint and menthol flavors, Gottlieb has signaled that the FDA intends on providing an exemption for the sake of adult smokers who are trying to quit smoking cigarettes with the help of electronic cigarettes.
