In the United States, a number of states have already raised the age requirement for buying tobacco products from 18 to 21. Data suggests that in California, where the legal age requirement has been raised from 18 to 21, underage tobacco purchases have begun to drop since the new law went into effect. In what is perhaps a not so surprising turn of events, the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, has announced a proposal to raise the state’s age requirement for tobacco products as well as electronic cigarettes and e-liquids to 21.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed raising the state of New York’s age requirement for buying tobacco and e-cigarette products from 18 to 21.

Currently, the legal age requirement for buying e-cigarette products and tobacco products in the state of New York is 18.

Governor Cuomo’s proposal doesn’t end there, as he is also now calling for e-cigarettes to be sold strictly through licensed retailers in the state, Bloomberg reports. Such a move would remove e-cigs and e-liquids from the shelves of pharmacies across the state where they are currently available for purchase to those who meet the age requirement.

In addition, the governor has proposed clarification of the State Health Department’s authority to ban the sale of certain e-liquid flavors.
