Following the release of Public Health England’s e-cigarette review, public health officials in the United Kingdom are now recommending that hospitals not only allow patients to vape indoors, but that they also take up selling e-cigarettes in an attempt to encourage smokers to use e-cigs instead.
While it might sound crazy to some, the recommendation comes as a result of the findings of the PHE’s e-cig review, which found evidence to support the notion that vaping is likely less harmful than smoking and dramatically so – somewhere around 95% less harmful, or so the researchers found.
Based on the new recommendations, patients should be allowed to vape inside of hospitals, even if they’re laying in their beds. Additionally, health officials are recommending that hospitals replace their smoking areas with vaping areas.
Public Health England’s independent review of electronic cigarettes was carried out by experts from Cancer Research UK, the University of Stirling, King’s College London, and the UK Center for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies.
Now if you think smokers are being treated unfairly in these new recommendations, there’s more. As per the new recommendations, NHS hospitals should completely ban the use of cigarettes on their grounds.
Martin Dockrell, PHE tobacco control lead, was quoted by The Telegraph as having said that at the least, they “would certainly encourage them to make at least some single occupancy rooms where people can vape.”
“We would certainly encourage them to make at least some single occupancy rooms where people can vape.”
