South Carolina’s Mount Pleasant Bans Vaping In Workplaces

The city of Mount Pleasant, the fourth largest in South Carolina, has banned e-cigarette use in workplaces across the city.

The new citywide electronic cigarette ban comes after the Town Council voted unanimously (9-0) in favor of the ban in February of this year. Neither the public nor the members of the council spoke for or against the anti-vaping measure.

The measure, which was introduced by city councilman Gary Santos, was finalized on March 13, 2018. Essentially, it adds language for electronic cigarette devices to the city’s existing smoking ordinance.

Santos, who first introduced the vaping ban in February, said at the time of introduction that folks “shouldn’t have to breathe other people’s smoke or vapor” when they go out to eat, The Post And Courier reported.

“When you go to a restaurant, you shouldn’t have to breathe other people’s smoke or vapor.”

Those who violate the city’s new vaping ordinance can be fined for up to $100, however, there are exceptions to the ban, including private residences and hotel rooms designated for smokers.

Citywide vaping bans are certainly not unique to Mount Pleasant. In fact, some countries, such as Singapore and Thailand, have banned vaping on a federal level, making it illegal within their borders. But not everyone is pleased with these bans. Notably, some vape shop owners are concerned that it may have a negative impact on not only their sales, but the ability of their customers to test and enjoy new vaping products on their premises.

What do you think of Mount Pleasant’s decision to ban indoor vape use? Do you think individual business owners should be allowed to decide whether or not they want to allow vaping in their businesses? You can share your thoughts on the matter in the comments section below.
