Truth Initiative, a nonprofit anti-smoking organization founded in 1999, has released a study called “While You Were Streaming” in which the organization points out numerous scenes in streaming shows in which cigarettes are present on screen.

According to the study’s findings, nearly 80% of the most popular shows for people ages 15 to 24 “prominently” depict smoking.

“79 percent of the shows most popular with young people aged 15-24 depict smoking prominently.”

And not only that, by Truth Initiative’s account, the tobacco use seen in online streaming content is not only “pervasive,” but also increasing in prominence.

The study also found tobacco use in streaming content to be more prominent than it is in cable and broadcast programming.

Truth Initiative suggests that streaming content providers can learn from the motion picture industry’s experiences displaying tobacco imagery to viewers, as the anti-smoking organization claims that well-documented movie research shows that young adults and youths in general are twice as likely to start smoking when exposed to high levels of tobacco imagery – this in comparison to those exposed to less tobacco imagery.

The organization put together a video about the findings of their study, which can be seen below.
