UCSF Vaping Study Correlates E-Cigs With Heart Attacks, But Experts Disagree On What It Means

A new study led by UCSF Professor Stan Glantz shows that there could be a link between e-cig use and heart attack risk, however, not all experts agree on what the study’s findings imply.

While Glantz was quoted by ABC7 as having said that he and his colleagues found daily e-cigarette users to exhibit “an almost doubling in their risk of having a heart attack,” Boston University School of Public Health Professor Michael Siegel was quick to point out that the CDC derived data used in the study fails to show whether or not heart attack sufferers were in fact vaping prior to suffering a heart attack.

“What we found is that daily e-cigarette user had an almost doubling in their risk of having a heart attack.”

Iterating his own view of the study’s findings, Siegel reportedly said that it’s not even known whether “these people used e-cigarettes before they had the heart attack” because the CDC data that the study relies on is based on a survey in which participants were asked if they vape and whether they had ever suffered a heart attack. Subsequently, Siegel suggested that the data shows not that e-cigs are causing heart attacks, but that those who have suffered heart attacks are actually “turning to e-cigarettes in an effort to quit smoking.”

“We don’t even know that these people used e-cigarettes before they had the heart attack (…) Not that e-cigarettes are causing heart attacks, but that people who have heart attacks are turning to e-cigarettes in an effort to quit smoking.”

While the two professors disagree on what the data may show, they do agree that when it comes to vaping and smoking, it’s vaping that is likely the less harmful of the two.

The two also agree that more research is necessary in order to fully understand the impacts of vaping on heart health.
