New research shows that 1 in 9 teens in the U.S. has tried vaping cannabis.

The finding is based on a survey of more than 20,000 teenagers, 9% of which self-reported having used an e-cigarette to vaporize marijuana. Extrapolating on these numbers, Fortune reports that 2.1 million students in U.S. middle and high schools have tried vaping marijuana.

The study’s authors–who are affiliated with the Office on Smoking and Health, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia–indicated that they believe it to be “important to monitor the substance youth use in e-cigarettes” in light of the “high concurrent use of tobacco and other substances.”

“Given the high concurrent use of tobacco and other substances, it is important to monitor the substances youth use in e-cigarettes.”

The study’s authors also noted that they believe their study to be the first to assess e-cigarette cannabis use among students in a broad sense, as prior research has focused on students in select grades.
