A man in Massachusetts was left with second-degree burns after spare batteries he was carrying in his pocket exploded. As a result, he claims he’s given up on vaping and gone back to smoking.

According to the man, identified in news reports as Tyler Newton, three extra vape batteries he was carrying in his pocket “blew up” and “lit on fire,” leaving his leg completely scorched.

The incident took place while he was in his Jeep driving back to his home after work.

The explosion reportedly filled his Jeep with smoke.

Newton was quoted by local news outlet WCVB as having said that he was lucky to have been “in the middle of a construction zone” at the time of the explosion, otherwise he “probably would have gone head-on with someone” because he “went back and forth across the road like three or four time before finally getting the fire out and getting to the side of the road.”

“Luckily, it was in the middle of a construction zone, where everything was being paved, so there was no oncoming traffic, otherwise I probably would have gone head-on with someone, because I went back and forth across the road like three or four times before finally getting the fire out and getting to the side of the road.”

He told the news station that he was told he suffered first and second-degree burns as a result of the explosion.

In light of the incident, Newton claims he’s thrown in the towel on vaping and reverted back to smoking cigarettes, though he believes it’s likely that he’ll try to find “other alternatives to try and quit smoking.”

The FDA has shared tips on how to avoid becoming the victim of a vape battery explosion. These tips include suggestions like properly storing loose batteries, using appropriate chargers, considering the use of vapes with safety features, and more.
