In California, one school district in particular just received a significant amount of funds to help combat underage use of smoking and vaping products.

The school district, Las Virgenes Unified School District (LVUSD) in Calabasas, California, was awarded a total of $1,075,000 in the form of a state grant awarded by none other than California Attorney General Xavier Becerra.

The funding comes from Proposition 56, which is the California Healthcare, Research and Prevention Tobacco Act of 2016.

The school district plans to partner with the cities of Agoura Hills, Hidden Hills, Westlake Village, and Calabasas as well as the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station to use the funds in a bid to improve student safety.

Superintendent Dr. Dan Stepenosky was quoted by Patch.com as having said that their “goal is to use this significant grant award to improve the J-Team’s resources to increase school safety and reduce student use of tobacco and electronic cigarettes.”

“We have had a close relationship with the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Juvenile Division, or J-Team, for many years, as well as with our partner cities (…) Our goal is to use this significant grant award to improve the J-Team’s resources to increase school safety and reduce student use of tobacco and electronic cigarettes.”

In a letter addressed to parents of students in the school district that was sent out earlier this year, Stepenosky wrote urged parents to educate their children in regards to “the dangers of vaping and juuling.”

“We urge you to educate your children regarding the dangers of vaping and juuling.”

Juuling is a reference to use of Juul brand vaping products, which are designed to vaporize liquid nicotine filled cartridges known as Juulpods.

While the bulk of the funds are intended to support the J-team, a smaller portion of the funds will be used to install state-of-the-art vapor and smoke detection devices in all of the secondary school bathrooms, the district indicated in a press release.

In other news, a high school in Maryland removed some of the doors from bathrooms around campus in a bid to discourage student vape use.
