Is It Illegal To Drive And Vape?

It is not illegal to drive while vaping in the United States or the United Kingdom, but that’s not to say that vaping can’t get you into some legal trouble (or worse) while driving.

In the United Kingdom, if you’re not exercising what a law enforcement officer deems to be an adequate amount of caution while driving, be it due to a distraction such as vaping or eating, you can find yourself on the receiving end of a license disqualification as well as a hefty fine.

If you are found guilty of driving while distracted, be it it as a result of filling your vehicle (hot-boxing/clam-baking) with vape clouds or something else such as eating or playing with your phone, you could be hit with a £2,500 fine.

As Sergeant Carl Knapp with the Sussex Road Policing Unit explained, even though there aren’t any laws which prohibit the use of a vaporizer while in a motor vehicle, one is required to always be “in full and proper control” of their vehicle while driving.

“There are no laws prohibiting vaping, however, you need to be in full and proper control of your vehicle at all times.”

So if you thought it might be a good idea to blanket the interior of your car with a thick, hazy cloud of vapor while driving, there’s a good chance you’ll want to think again – or at the least, crack a window to let the vapor pour out. Otherwise, you could be faced with the possibility of a fine and loss of license.

The real concern here is the safety of those involved, which include drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and so on. If a driver is distracted, even for a moment, the results can be disastrous – even fatal.
