While it is true that the sale of e-cigarettes to minors is illegal in the state of New York, it wasn’t until the state’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, signed a bill earlier this month that it became illegal to give minors free e-cigarettes as promotional items.
The recently signed bill’s sponsor, Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (D-Manhattan), was quoted by the NY Daily News as having said that the goal of the bill’s backers is to simply “cut off access to e-cigarettes whether they are being given away or purchased.”
“We want to cut off access to e-cigarettes whether they are being given away or purchased.”
The unintended side-effect, seemingly, of this newly enacted legislation is that some adult smokers may not receive free e-cigs that help turn them on to what could very well be a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarettes.
For reference, Public Health England’s latest independent e-cigarette review found e-cigs to be around 95% less harmful than traditional cigarettes.
