These days, we see a number of proprietary vape cartridges for cannabis oils that are designed to work exclusively with the vaporizers that they’re designed for, such as the G Pen Gio and the Pax Era. And unfortunately for consumers, these types of closed systems limit the opportunity for their users to experience the wide variety of oils available on the market today, which is expanding regularly.
The Universal Benefit
With a universal cartridge design — one which works with all oil vapes, similar to what we already see with 510 threaded devices and accessories — consumers will have the opportunity to select from a much wider array of oils, as opposed to finding themselves limited to just the cartridges that their brand of vaporizer supports. For the consumer, this makes a lot of sense, but for the manufacturers of these products- it’s a whole ‘nother story.
For the manufacturers, there’s the obvious financial incentive to lock customers in and have them using only their products. You buy the vaporizer and then you buy the cartridges. And seeing as the cartridges run out and require replacement, you continue to buy their cartridges over and over, creating a customer for some time to come.
Will Things Change?
While it’s readily apparent that a universal cartridge design would prove beneficial to consumers and quite possibly in more ways than one, it might be some time before we see such a thing. And if it plays out in a similar fashion as we’ve seen with smartphone technology, there may never be a universal standard in cannabis oil cartridge design. But it could happen. In fact, we’re not all that far away from a universal standard today, seeing as 510 thread already sees widespread use across a range of vaping products made by various manufacturers.
