Does Vaping Help Quit Smoking? Georgia State University Study Says No

A new study conducted by a group of tobacco researchers at Georgia State University’s School of Public Health have found “no evidence” that electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) such as e-cigarettes are effective smoking cessations.

They did, however, find users of e-cigs and similar products to be more likely to attempt to quit smoking. Still, this, based on their research, did not translate into a higher rate of success in quitting smoking.

The one-year study, which was published in the journal PLOS ONE, analyzed the responses of over 850 smokers who participated in a 2015 survey and subsequent follow-up survey conducted by GfK (Growth for Knowledge), the world’s fourth largest market research organization.

Dr. Scott Weaver, the study’s lead author and an assistant professor of epidemiology and biostatistics, was quoted in a Georgia State University news release as having said that while “[m]any smokers are using ENDS in their smoking quit attempts,” the devices “may not be providing a sufficiently satisfying nicotine delivery and overall user experience to completely supplant their smoking.”

Weaver suggests that regulatory efforts “aimed at improving the appeal and satisfaction of ENDS available to smokers” and a reduction in nicotine levels in combustible tobacco products “to non-addictive levels” might be “necessary for ENDS to have a meaningful role in reducing the staggering public health burden of smoking.”

Shortly after the study’s results were published, Georgia State University announced that it had received $1.4 million from the National Institutes of Health to lead a research initiative aimed at evaluating the effects of early e-cigarette regulations.
