The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sent letters to four manufacturers of electronic cigarettes requesting information in a bid to better understand the appeal of their products to today’s youth, the agency announced earlier today.

The official requests for information sent out to the four e-cig manufacturers come on the heels of an initial request for information made to Juul Labs, the San Francisco-based vaping company behind the most popular electronic cigarette device in the United States. The similar request for information made to Juul Labs last month and the latest round of official requests for information sent today come at a time when the FDA is taking the initiative to address youth vaping concerns as part of their Youth Tobacco Prevention Plan.

The FDA’s Youth Tobacco Prevention Plan aims to not only protect today’s youth from nicotine and tobacco products, but also from electronic cigarettes and other electronic nicotine deliver systems, which are known as ENDS for short.

Scott Gottlieb, M.D., the current head of the FDA, indicated in a statement that the FDA will explore all of its regulatory options based on what the agency learns from the information mandated from the various manufacturers that the agency has requested information from.

“We’ll explore all of our regulatory options, including enforcement actions, based on what we learn from the information these manufacturers are required to provide.”

The FDA Commissioner added that the agency’s “top priority is to prevent kids from getting hooked on nicotine.”

The vape companies that the FDA officially requested information from and the products that caused the agency to target the companies with official requests for information are as follows:

  • J Well – Bo Starter Kit
  • YGT Investment LLC & 7 Daze LLC – Zoor Kit
  • Liquid Filling Solutions LLC – Myle Products
  • SVR Inc. – SMPO Kit

All of the companies mentioned above have until July 12, 2018 to respond to the FDA’s official requests for information.

Additional requests for information may be sent to other companies whose products raise similar concerns of youth use, the FDA stated in their press announcement detailing the latest round of information requests sent to e-cig manufacturers.
