What Is Juul?

To kick things we off, we’ll first explain what a Juul is. In essence, Juul devices are ENDS, which is short for electronic nicotine deliver systems. Another phrase that one might use to define a Juul device is “electronic cigarette,” or e-cigarette for short. Juul Labs describes it as “an easy to use vaporizer designed for adult smokers looking for a genuine alternative to smoking.”

Juuls, unlike cigarettes, do not burn tobacco. In fact, they neither use tobacco nor burn. Instead, they utilize e-liquid, which is also known as e-juice and vape juice. While the liquid does contain nicotine, among other things, it does not contain any actual tobacco, which is the plant from which nicotine is derived.

If it doesn’t produce smoke, well, what does it produce? If you’re wondering this, the answer is simple: Juul devices produce a nicotine-infused aerosol vapor.

Juul is also the name, well, part of the name (Juul Labs), of the company behind the Juul line of vaping products. A brand, a company, and a line of vaping products. That’s essentially what Juul is.

What Is Juuling?

For those who don’t yet understand the lingo of Juul users, “Juuling” is the act of using a Juul device. So when someone says they’re Juuling, what they mean is that they’re using a Juul, taking puffs of the vapor that it produces.

What Are Juul Pods?

Juul pods, as many refer to them, are technically known as “Juulpods” (notice the lack of a space between “Juul” and “pods”). These pods, as they’re called, are e-liquid filled cartridges that are designed to work exclusively with Juul devices.

Juul’s pods contain glycerol, propylene glycol, benzoic acid, nicotine, natural oils, extracts, an flavor. While some manufacturers of e-liquids utilize freebase nicotine in their formulations, Juul Labs uses nicotine salts. One obvious difference between the two being that what Juul uses for nicotine (salts) is found naturally occurring in tobacco leaves, whereas the freebase nicotine used by some e-juice manufacturers is not.

Are There Nicotine-Free Juul Pods?

Juul Labs currently does not offer nicotine-free pods. All of their pods contain nicotine. The nicotine strength(s) available may differ based on locale.

When Juul first introduced their pods to market in the United States, they were available in only one nicotine strength: 5% by weight. Since then, Juul has announced the impending release of lower nicotine strength pods in the U.S., which will contain 3% nicotine by weight.

Do Juul Pods Leak?

The question of whether Juul pods leak is not an easy one to answer. While some may have experienced leaking pods, others may not have. In this writer’s case, it has become to relatively clear over time that Juul’s pods can and sometimes do leak, however, it is not common. When a pod is leaking, which is relatively rare, it’s likely worth contacting Juul Labs to raise the issue and find a replacement.

As it stands, the pods should not leak. If you find that yours is covered in e-juice, there’s a good chance that it’s not working as intended and that there is in fact an issue with that particular pod that’s causing it to leak. If that’s the case, we suggest contacting Juul’s customer service team to let them know. But if this is happening frequently, we suspect there may be an issue with how you’re handling your pods. Either way, we suggest reaching out to Juul’s team to resolve the issue.

Do Pods Expire?

While Juul pods don’t actually have a set expiration date, they are subject to what Juul refers to as “a natural flavor decrease” a year after purchase.

The limit is currently 15 packs per month, which translates into 60 individual pods.
