Western Australians Risk $45,000 Fine For Vaping Nicotine

In Australia, government regulations have effectively banned electronic cigarettes despite a growing body of evidence suggesting that they could prove beneficial to the country’s smokers.

In the city of Perth (photo), the capital of Western Australia, residents are currently prohibited from purchasing and possessing liquid nicotine without a physician’s recommendation. In other words, no e-cigs for Western Australians without a prescription.

For residents in Western Australia, the situation is grim for nicotine vapers as they face the possibility of being fined $45,000 if they’re found to be in possession of the nicotine-infused liquid used by e-cigarettes, which is known as e-juice or e-liquid. This comes as a result of Western Australia’s Medicines and Poisons Act, which makes it illegal to possess liquid nicotine in Western Australia.

Regardless of the laws governing electronic cigarettes in Australia, some Australians are vaping anyways. By one account, an estimated 3.1 percent of Australians that are either 14 years of age or older have tried a vaporizer — a number that some may perceive to be quite high in light of the country’s current e-cig laws.

For some Australian vapers, there is a legal workaround to the current regulations restricting e-cig access and that workaround is a doctor’s recommendation. With a recommendation from a licensed physician, it is possible to legally acquire e-liquid to vape.

While the laws and regulations governing e-cigs, liquid nicotine, and vaping products in general are already, by some standards, quite strict in Australia, there’s a chance that they could soon be that much stricter in some parts of the country as PerthNow recently reported that the state government of Western Australia is moving to tighten up the laws governing the use of vaporizers such as e-cigs. If the state government continues to move in this direction, it could put vaping in the same realm as smoking as far as regulations are concerned.

Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, we see similar vaping restrictions either in place, being taken into consideration, or in the process of being enacted. But in some places, it’s another story entirely. In the United Kingdom for example, Public Health England, which is part of the taxpayer-funded national healthcare system, has made it increasingly clear to residents that vaping is that much less harmful than smoking and as a result, smokers should be encouraged to take up vaping as a means by which to give up cigarettes.

While Public Health England’s stance on vaping may come as a surprise to some, particularly those not yet aware of the potential health benefits of vaping for smokers who make the transition from smoker to vaper, it’s a position that’s backed by a growing body of scientific evidence. Based on the findings of PHE’s latest e-cig evidence review, which was conducted by independent experts, e-cigarettes are somewhere around 95 percent less harmful than the traditional cigarettes they aim to displace.
