Are E-Cigs Really Safer Than Smoking?

While there are those in the scientific community and elsewhere in society that continue to research, weigh, and debate the potential health implications of vaping, The Guardian’s Linda Bauld seems to believe that the consensus on the matter is clear.

By Bauld’s account, headlines in recent times, if any indicator as to vaping’s safety, would have you thinking that you might as well stick to smoking for fear of what could happen if you chose to vape instead. One such example being exploding e-cig batteries. Do vaporizer batteries sometimes explode? According to various reports, yes – they have, at times, been known to explode. But a better question, perhaps, is how often? When you consider the rate at which vape batteries explode in contrast to the rate at which smokers succumb to life ending ailments, the answer, to us, seems apparent: vaping is safer than smoking. Or as Bauld (or her editors) wrote in the title of her report, “e-cigarettes are definitely safer than smoking.”

In her report, she cites the first “longer term” study on vaporizing, in which researcher compared participants’ exposure to toxins. The study’s participants being composed of those who had stopped smoking and were now vaping instead and those who were continuing to smoke. Comparing the two, they found a large reduction in the number of carcinogens and other toxins in the vapers, whereas the smokers were more or less what one might as well expect. This study was funded by Cancer Research UK.

While there’s plenty more research to back Bauld’s claim, we want to know what you think. Is vaping “definitely” safer than smoking or is there still room for debate?
